What goes into a concrete block wall in College Station?

A concrete block wall is hollow concrete block laid in mortar, with grout, a soupy concrete, poured into some or all of the hollow cores to make it stronger. In College Station we build concrete block walls as privacy and screen walls, and as retaining walls that hold back a slope.

Most folks call me with one of two problems, a yard that's open to the street or a slope that keeps creeping toward the house, and which one you've got moves the price and the schedule more than anything else. A wall that holds back soil needs an engineer's design before we build, plus more steel and grout, so it costs more and takes longer to get going, while a freestanding wall mostly comes down to its length, its height and how it's finished on top. Taller walls also bring a city permit, and we sort that out before we start so it's part of the plan. Your written estimate spells out the work and the materials, so you can see what's driving your number.

How do you know your yard needs a block wall?

Dirt spilling onto the patio

After a hard rain you find mud across the patio or driveway, and the slope above it looks a little shorter each time. That usually means the ground needs something holding it back, and every storm you wait carries more of it downhill and makes the cut bigger to fix.

An old wall leaning out

A wall that tilts toward the low side, or a crack that opens a little wider each season, means the wall is being pushed harder than it was built for. If you wait, it keeps moving until the job is a full tear-out and rebuild, plus cleanup of whatever it lands on.

A yard open to everyone

From the back porch you see traffic, the neighbor's trash cans or the AC units, and the wood fence keeps rotting or blowing over. A block wall won't rot the way wood does, and every year you put it off is another season of patching fence boards.

How we build a concrete block wall

The first thing I ask is whether the wall will hold back soil, because that answer changes who designs it and how we grout and reinforce it. Once the layout is set, our crew digs and pours the footing, lays the block in mortar and stands steel in the cores wherever the plan calls for it. The block industry's grouting guide says a wall can be partially grouted, with grout only in the cores that hold steel, or solidly grouted with every core filled, and that when the steel is spaced close together, filling every core may be faster and more economical, so the steel layout shapes both the labor and the price. The same industry says exposed walls above ground typically need control joints, sealed vertical breaks that let the wall move as it shrinks, though walls with enough horizontal steel may not, and I'll tell you which way we're going on yours before we start. Then we cap the top of the wall.

Some jobs reach past a single wall. If the block is going below ground to carry a house or an addition, that's foundation block wall installation, with its own loads and its own plan, and if you're putting a grill and counters out back, we can build the block base and the brick or stone around it as outdoor kitchen masonry.

  • Freestanding privacy or screen wall

This suits a yard that needs privacy from a road or a neighbor, or a screen around trash cans and equipment, since nothing pushes on it but wind and its own weight. If the wall sits by a busy road, the grouting guide lists sound control, fire rating and termite resistance among what extra grout can add.

  • Retaining wall for a sloped yard

This suits a yard that steps down and needs the ground held in place, and it takes more steel and grout because the soil leans on it every day. It gets engineered first, as the city requires, so it usually costs more than a freestanding wall of the same size.

Building a concrete block wall in College Station

In College Station, the city issues building permits for retaining walls over two feet tall and for walls of brick, stone or concrete over six feet, and a retaining wall also has to be designed by a professional engineer, with the plans signed and sealed by an engineer registered in Texas. That design step goes into your budget and your schedule before any block shows up, because the engineer's plans set the wall's dimensions and how we build it. When the permit is ours to pull, we pull it and set up the inspections, and for a shorter wall I check what the city wants at your address before we dig rather than guess.

Most of the block walls we build around here are privacy walls along back lots that face a road, screen walls around patios and equipment, and short walls where a yard steps down. We get the same calls on jobs in Bryan and Navasota, and since each city has its own rules, I check them the same way.

What happens after you call about a block wall?

  1. Walk the site with me

I come out myself, look the spot over with you and talk through what the wall has to do and what it doesn't need. If something nearby is causing trouble, like water running toward the wall line, I'd rather tell you now than build over it.

  2. Get the estimate in writing

You get a written estimate that spells out the work and the materials, so you can see where the grout, the steel and any engineering land in the price. We sort out the city side before anyone starts, permit and engineer included when your wall needs them.

  3. We build, then walk it

Our crew of masons does the work and I check the footing, block, steel and grout as it goes. A permitted wall gets a final inspection once it's done, and then we walk the wall together and leave the place clean.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit to build a block wall in College Station?

Yes, once the wall passes the city's height limits covered above. The application asks for a site plan or property survey showing where the wall goes with its dimensions, plus drawings covering the footings and materials. If you'd rather pull the permit yourself on your own home, we'll tell you what the city will want to see.

How much does a concrete block wall cost per square foot?

Across the US, installing a concrete block wall usually runs about $16 to $19 per square foot, and that's a national figure, not our price here. Your own wall's height, grouting and whether it needs an engineer all push a College Station number up or down. Our on-site estimate gives you the figure for your wall in writing.

What causes cracks in a concrete block wall?

Most fine cracks in block come from the block shrinking as it dries, and the block industry says those shrinkage cracks aren't a structural concern. Control joints, the sealed breaks I mentioned earlier, are there to keep the wall looking right and to limit moisture and air getting through. A crack that keeps widening or comes with a lean is a different story, and that one's worth having someone look at.

Can I build a concrete block wall myself in College Station?

Yes, on your own homestead you can build a permitted wall without registering as a contractor, but you have to apply to the city for the building permit before construction begins. A retaining wall still needs the engineer's design either way. If you want us to take on part of it, I'm glad to talk it through.

How do I check that a retaining wall engineer is licensed in Texas?

Ask the engineer for their Texas license, because state law defines an engineer as someone licensed to practice engineering in Texas, under the state's engineering board. The city also wants retaining wall plans signed and sealed by an engineer registered in Texas, so that license is the one that counts for your wall.

Do College Station's development rules apply if I live outside city limits?

Partly. The city's development code covers structures and land use inside city limits, and only limited sections reach properties just outside them in the city's extraterritorial jurisdiction, the band of land the city keeps some say over past its line. If your lot sits out there, I find out which rules reach your wall before we plan it.
